Club Secretary Geoff Smith collects the Sydenhams Wessex League "Team of the Month" award for January on behalf of AFC Stoneham

AFC Stoneham stalwart Geoff Smith is stepping down after 50 years' service

By Admin - 15/02/17

AFC STONEHAM are on the lookout for a new general club secretary.

The vacancy has arisen due to current club secretary Geoff Smith wishing to take a very well-earned rest after a phenomenal 50 years' service.

Smith's replacement will work primarily with the Purples' two men's teams in the Sydenhams Wessex and Wyvern Combination leagues.

The role will be supported by two other youth secretaries dealing with the other 21 teams within the rapidly expanding Sydenhams One club.

"Geoff Smith will still be very much involved with the club and will hand over duties whilst always being available to the new person for help and support on a day-to-day basis," explained Stoneham chairman Mark Stupple.

"AFC Stoneham are going from strength to strength and recently presented to around 100 people their plans and ambitions for the future.

"It includes increasing the number of teams prior to moving into a brand new facility in a couple of years.

"The general club secretary's role will be an integral part of the club's plans and ambitions."

The new secretary must be well organised, enthusiastic, possess strong communication skills, be computer literate and very personable.

Interested parties should contact Mark Stupple, in confidence, on 07764 882966 or at

U8 Sponsored Fun Run

By Admin - 14/02/17

On Saturday 19th November, the 4 U8 teams took part in a sponsored fun run at the AFC Stoneham ground. The fun run consisted of weaving in and out of poles, jumping through hoops, over hurdles, underneath 2 nets and a sprint. Once the circuit had been completed, the children then did a penalty shoot out through holes in a sheet. They enjoyed it so much, they all did at least 5 circuits, with some of them doing more, and they even managed to make Darren join in too! Although it was cold, drizzly and very muddy, the children had a great time and were still smiling at the end of it. Each team raised their own amount of money, so a great effort from all the children, parents and sponsors.

Club Meeting and Presentation

By Admin - 5/2/17

On February 2nd the club organised a night in front of nearly 100 invited guests, from both the club and the local community, to present the clubs future plans, aspirations and vision.

Chairman,Mark Stupple, and Club Secretary, Geoff Smith, presented the history of the club, their ongoing plans and objectives. The club has exciting initiatives and growth plans which will run aside their move to a new facility in the near future.

The club also launched a brand new club folder outlining the future and sponsorship opportunities including all ground naming rights at both the current and new ground. The need for fresh volunteers to ensure the club continues to move forward at a fast pace was also highlighted throughout the night.

Chairman Mark Stupple said " Considering this was our first attempt at such an event we are very pleased with the turnout and the very positive response from all that attended. The new club folder will also allow us to present something slightly more meaningful to both individuals and companies moving forward. I am sure we will hold a similar event durng the summer as an update whilst we continue to look for more volunteers to help us meet our exciting vision particularly with the move to our new facility".

Any interested parties in either sponsorship or volunteering can contact Mark on 07764 882966 or

Chairmans Notes

By Admin - 13/1/17

I would like to welcome both the players and officials of Fleet Spurs, along with todays match officials, to the Elliotts Arena

for todays Wessex League Div 1 game.

Our boys are currently on a good run of form culminating with a superb 5-0 win over Aldershot Town on Tuesday night in the Russell Cotes cup . We will now travel to Gosport Borough in the quarter final whilst we also look forward to our Hampshire Cup quarter final on Tuesday at Basingstoke Town which will be another big night for the club having never reached this stage of the competition before.

Whilst our first team did not play last saturday our young reserve team won 6-0 at New Milton including two goals from 16 year old Max Cullen. The reserve team is a vital part of our club structure and will continue to develop in importance particularly in terms of developing young players from our youth teams whilst making the sometimes underestimated transition into mens football and ultimately into our first team.

On Saturday we rightly had 3 senior first team players dropping into the reserves to gain minutes having not played recently for various reasons.I was delighted with the example and attitude they displayed to our young players which is not only part of their development but again illustrates exactly how the two senior teams should function together to the overall benefit of the club. Thank you to Welchy, Merl and Sergio for the great example and attitude that they all displayed.

Whilst we are enjoying a tremendous season on the pitch we are always looking to progress off the pitch as well. This week we announced that our 3rd summer tournament will take place over the weekend of July 1st and 2nd whilst we have arranged an important night on Thursday Feb 2nd at Eastleigh FC (7.30pm) to present our plans and vision for the club moving forward. We are hoping many people in the local community will attend to learn more about AFC Stoneham and we would be delighted to see you there on the night.

Finally, we had a very tough game away at Fleet earlier in the season winning by the odd goal in seven and I am sure today will be another tough encounter.

I hope you enjoy the game and your visit to AFC Stoneham

Player News

By Admin - 16/11/16

Our injury list and unavailability of players has been very well documented and has clearly impacted on our season to date although this has led to opportunities for particularly young players including Tom Hogan, Luke Cron, Conor Humphries,Tom Moore,Greg Cooper and Scott Bullock .

We sadly lost the services of Liam Mcgee, Terry New and Andy Turner who transferred to Romsey Town although are delighted to announce that Tom Egerton has returned after a short sabbatical. To the players that have moved to pastures new we wish them every success and still hope that one day they may return to play in purple as they are all very good characters.

On the injury front we have been hampered by Ben Dexters recurring injury which means he has not been able to play 2 consecutive games and a long term injury to captain and midfied dynamo Chris Manning. On a far brighter note Alex Welch and Graham Bird should be returning to action within a week or so from long term injuries coupled with the return of spaniard Sergio Caballero who has been away in Mexico.

We have "irons in the fire" on a couple of new signings very soon and would like to welcome the first of these , Billy Lawrence from Hythe, to the club.

New Floodlights are up!!

By Admin - 06/10/16

After nearly a year of hard work including grant applications, quotations, planning permission, ecology reports and many meetings our brand new lights are now up.

Our preferred supplier , Surfacelux Ltd of Liverpool, commenced the work on Monday and all the lights were up and running at 8pm on Thursday night. We also took the old lights down which were some 30 years old and sadly no longer fit for purpose in the Wessex League and Step 6 football whilst our new lights will give us at least Step 4 grading criteria and hopefully beyond.

Ourgroundsman,IaindCowe, had  done an unbelievable job in getting the old lights re-assembled and working last year, after they hadstoodtdormant  for some 15 years, to allow us to enter the Wessex League however we always knew that we would need to replace them as soon as possible for us to move forward whilst seeing them blown down during the winter on a regular basis was not helping our stress levels!!

Iain, present when they were switched on, said " I have aged 20 years with these old lights and to say they have been a challenge would be a big understatement. To see the new lights up and working was brilliant and at last I can sleep well at night knowing these lights will stay up and work! . I didnt shed too many tears when I took the old ones down for the last time!".

Well done to Iain for all of his hard work in getting us to this stage . Another great day for AFC Stoneham!

FA Vase

By Admin - 06/10/16

After our victory over Longlevens in the last round we have been handed a home tie with Shaftesbury in the next round of the FA Vase on Saturday October 22nd with a 3pm kick off. We have already travelled to Shaftesbury in the league losing 3-2 and with home advantage this game should be a very good one

AFC Stoneham to have new floodlights installed

By Admin - 28/08/16

We are delighted to announce that the club are having new floodlights installed with work due to commence on Monday September 19th.

The new lights and columns will replace equipment which in some cases is now 25 years old.

This will be the culmination of 9 months hard work including obtaining 2 seperate grants and planning permission with a full ecology report on our ground. We are very grateful to both the Football Stadia Improvement Fund and The National Sports Centre Trust  in helping us to fund the project.

Once the lights are installed we would hope to arrange a game against prestigeous opposition to officially launch the lights .

Chairman Mark Stupple said "This is fantastic news for the club and the result of a huge amount of work. Our groundsman, Iain Cowe, has done a superb job installing and revamping the old lights which did the job last season however the brand new lights will meet the ground grading criteria for 2 levels above where we currently are as a club".
